The best beaches near La Rochelle (and our tips for enjoying them without the crowds)

Summer in La Rochelle, the peaceful version (and salty)

Want to lay your towel down in a natural setting, with the sound of waves in the background... but without the July-August crowds? Good news: around La Rochelle, there are still unspoilt beaches, ideal for a sunny break away from the hustle and bustle, even in the height of summer.

In this article, we take you on a tour of the locals' favourite beaches and give you a few tips on how to enjoy the seaside in peace, just a few minutes from your hotel.

1. Chef de Baie beach: the most secluded

Located 10 minutes by car from La Rochelle (or 25 minutes by bike via the coastal cycle path), Chef de Baie beach is a little gem still unknown to tourists.

Protected from the wind by a cliff and bordered by a wooded park, it offers a wilder atmosphere, perfect for reading, swimming or picnicking in the shade of the pine trees.

Tip: come at the end of the morning on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

2. Aytré: the widest (and quietest in the evening)

Just 6 km from La Rochelle, Aytré beach stretches for over 3 kilometres. People come here to walk barefoot in the sand at low tide, watch the sand yachts... or enjoy the sunset away from the hustle and bustle of the Old Port.

Tip: at the end of the day, settle down with an impromptu aperitif. Few people, an unobstructed view of the ocean, and the perfect atmosphere for an evening with your feet in the sand.

3. L’Anse de Pampin (Île de Ré): a nature getaway by bike

Fancy a change of scenery during your seaside holiday? Head to Île de Ré, just 25 minutes from the hotel. After crossing the bridge (by car or bike), head to Pampin beach at the entrance to the island.

Less crowded than Saint-Martin or La Couarde, it is a very natural pebble beach. Ideal for a quiet moment, with a view of Fort Boyard in the distance.

Top tip: hire a bike next to the hotel and set off for the day with your picnic basket.

4. La Concurrence: the closest... but not at any time

It is often seen as La Rochelle's ‘city beach’. And it's true: La Concurrence beach is a stone's throw from the centre and the hotel. However, at low tide or early in the morning, it becomes a real haven of peace.

Try it: a morning walk at sunrise, followed by breakfast at the harbour. The atmosphere is magical, and you'll feel like you own the city.

5. Our tips for avoiding the crowds (without avoiding the beach)

Here are a few tips to help you enjoy La Rochelle's beaches like a local:

  • Avoid the 2pm–5pm slot (the busiest time)
  • Go in the morning, late afternoon or on windy days
  • Consider cycling: you can reach more remote areas without the stress of parking
